The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Dean of the UM-SJTU Joint Institute. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of the leading universities in China. With unremitting efforts of 117 years, SJTU is striding steadily towards the first-class university of the world. The Joint Institute (JI) is a unit within the SJTU that is co-directed by both the University of Michigan (U-M) and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) as a special educational zone on the SJTU campus. The JI serves as a place to experiment with new educational models on a Chinese campus. It also serves as a landing spot for a significant number of U-M students doing summer and fall study abroad programs. The JI has an enrollment of approximately 1200 degree-seeking students, as well as a transient population of up to 70 U-M students every summer. The JI recruits high quality faculty to conduct high-impact research and direct doctoral and masters level education. The details of JI can be found on its website as http://umji.sjtu.edu.cn/. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the JI. The Deanwill provide leadership in defining and articulating the JI’s strategic priorities; recruiting and maintaining an excellent faculty; creating and supporting educational and research programs of the highest quality; attracting excellent students; creating collaborative opportunities with other schools and units within both the SJTU and the U-M; and enhancing productive relationships with alumni, donors, and local, national, and international communities. The Dean of JI plays a major leadership role in the broader SJTU community, stimulating and facilitating synergistic collaboration with other schools and colleges and providing a test-bed for western models of education and research to be demonstrated on a Chinese campus. As the chief academic, administrative, and financial officer of the JI, the Dean reports directly to the UM-SJTU Partnership board, which is comprised of members of the leadership of each institution. The Dean chairs the JI Academic Programs Group, which consists of UM and SJTU faculty who provide input on governance and academic issues for the JI. The Dean also selects and leads the Dean’s Cabinet, which comprises the academic and administrative leadership of the JI.

The successful candidate will be tenurable at the full professor level in the JI. He or she will provide intellectual leadership to JI, and should be an internationally recognized scholar with the desire, ability, and vision to sustain a leadership role within an organization that is at the forefront of developing new models for research and scholarship, graduate education, and undergraduate education, within China. The Dean will need to employ a high level of administrative acumen in leading the JI as a unit within the SJTU that generally operates under different academic and procedural rules than the host institution. He or she must possess a fundamental commitment to diversity in all its forms.

Familiarity with the U-M or SJTU (or both) is an important plus.
