Ray G. Young - Group Vice President, Finance

Ray G. Young was appointed group vice president, Finance, effective November 1, 2007. In this role Young has responsibility for the regional chief financial officers, Internal Audit, Investor Relations, Tax and Real Estate. He is a member of the Automotive Strategy Board and the Automotive Product Board.

In his previous post, Young was president and managing director of GM do Brasil and Mercosur Operations, beginning in January 2004.

Young was born on December 22, 1961 in Southampton, Ontario to parents who emigrated from Guangzhou in southern China. He completed his bachelor's degree in business administration at the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in 1984 and his master's degree in business administration at the University of Chicago in 1986, specializing in international business.

He joined the finance staff of General Motors at its Canadian headquarters in Oshawa, Ontario, and was transferred to the General Motors Treasury Operations in New York City in 1988, where he progressed through various management positions. In 1992, Young was appointed director of corporate finance. In 1993, he became GM's European treasurer based in Brussels, Belgium, responsible for GM Europe's corporate finance and treasury activities. In 1996, Young returned to North America and became vice president of finance of CAMI Automotive, a 50/50 joint venture with Suzuki Motor Company.

In 1998, Young joined Suzuki Motor Company at its headquarters in Hamamatsu, Japan. In this capacity, Young initiated a new phase of the global strategic alliance with Suzuki and was responsible for a number of collaborative ventures around the world between Suzuki and GM. In addition, Young served as a member of GM's Asia Pacific Strategy Board.

In August 2001, Young returned to North America and became GM North America vice president and chief financial officer. He also served on the GM North America Strategy Board.

Young has spent time advising and mentoring the GM Chinese Affinity Group and was the executive champion for the GM Asian Indian group. He has served as the executive vice president of the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA). In October 2002, Young received the Organization of Chinese Americans' Corporate Achievement Award. In addition, he was recognized by Goldsea Asian American Daily as one of the 70 most influential Asian Americans and is a 2007 recipient of the Museum of Chinese in the Americas’ Legacy Award.

In Brazil, he has served on the Board of the American Chamber of Commerce and actively participated on the Business Affairs Committee.   In addition, he has been recognized for his contributions to the Brazilian automotive industry through the SAE Brasil and the Association of Brazilian TV Automotive Journalists, ABIAUTO.
